Central Kurram blast kills ten
PARACHINAR: At least ten people were killed and various others injured in a blast in Central Kurram Agency, Geo News reported Thursday.According to the reports, a passengers’ van was targeted with a remote-controlled bomb device on Plosene Road in Central Kurram, altogether destroying the vehicle.The blast killed at least ten people on the spot and injured and injured scores others.The injured are being shifted to Doaba and Tul.
12 die as passenger bus overturns in Quetta
QUETTA: At least 12 passengers died while scores other sustained injuries when a passenger bus overturned near Thal point on RCD Highway in Quetta on Thursday morning, Geo News reported.The rescue efforts are underway while injured have been shifted to hospitals, sources said.
Sargodha road mishap kills 6; wounds 10
SARGODHA: At least six persons died while another 10 suffered injuries as a result of collision between truck and passenger bus in Sargodha District. Three among wounded men are critical in condition, Geo News reported Thursday morning.According to motorway police, the bus driver, taking a rash turn committed mistake as he lost control, letting bus meet head-on collision with a truck parked on roadside at Bhera point on Faisalabad-Rawalpindi motorway.At least six passengers lost their lives including bus driver, conductor and a woman while over 10 injured.Wounded have been shifted to hospitals. Most died were heading to their hometowns on Eid holidays.
Four US drone strikes kill 24 in N Waziristan
MIRANSHAH: A US drone strike early Thursday killed at least four militants in Pakistan''s northwestern tribal belt near the Afghan border, security officials said.The latest strike hit North Waziristan, the same tribal district targeted in three other drone attacks in the past 24 hours and a renowned hub for Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked militants.A total of 24 militants were killed in the four strikes.The target of the fourth drone attack was a compound in outskirts of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan.\"Two US drones fired three missiles. We have reports that four militants were killed,\" a security official based in Peshawar told media.Two intelligence officials in Miranshah also confirmed the attack and the death toll.

‘Students on HEC scholarship suffer shortage of funds’
KARACHI: Dr Pirzada Qasim, the Vice Chancellor of Karachi University (KU), has said Wednesday students, seeking foreign studies on Higher Education Commission (HEC) scholarship, are being humiliated enough to raise donations for meeting their educational expenses on account of lack of funds were to be provided by the commission, Geo News reported.He feared the government-run HEC may have to face judicial case if it failed to pay off on time the dues meant for educational development plans.“The government of Pakistan slashed HEC’s budget from 22.50 billion rupees to 18.50 billion rupees for fiscal year 2010 in March this year but despite mounting directives issued from Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, HEC has been provided mere 11 billion rupees during period from July to December 2009”, revealed the chairman of HEC Dr. Javaid Laghari.Not a single penny has been released to HEC in last quarter for 2009 fiscal year, he maintained.
14 killed in three US drone strikes in NWA
MIRANSHAH: Three separate drone strikes in North Waziristan Agency killed 10 people, Geo News reported Wednesday.The third US drone attack killed at least four militants in the country’s northwestern tribal belt near the Afghan border.The latest strike again hit North Waziristan, the same tribal district targeted in the previous two drone attacks and a renowned hub for Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked militants.A total of 14 militants have now been killed in the strikes on Wednesday.The target of the third drone attack was a compound in Dandey Darpakhel village, five kilometres (three miles) northwest of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan.Today’s first drone strike occurred in Dargah Mandi area of Tehsil Miranshah where two missiles were fired at two houses, killing six people on the spot and injuring two others. The houses were destroyed completely.In the second drone attack a car was targeted with two missiles in Datakhel area, killing four people.The drone strikes are reported to have killed mostly the extremists and militants.
Official perks taken back from Irfan Qadir of NAB
ISLAMABAD: Deposed prosecutor general National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Irfan Qadir has been stripped off all the official perks following directives of the Prime Minister issued on Tuesday night, removing the former from his post.In the wake of the orders issued by the Prime Minister, the official staff put at the disposal of Irfan Qadir has been called back and his official telephone line disconnected.The deposed prosecutor general is yet to vacate the official residence. He has been asked to leave the official residence in the next few days.It has been learnt that Irfan Qadir had not only been re-appointed in gross violation of the NAB Ordinance but he was also given a handsome pay besides extra perks.
Zero-point dyke breached to save Johi, Dadu
DADU: A breach has been created in FP dyke at Zero-point to save Tehsils Dadu and Johi from flood while National Highway, which was kept closed for 28 days, has been opened for vehicular traffic, restoring communication link between Sindh, Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.The FP dyke was breached at RD-1 to release the water pressure on MNV Drain and also to save Tehsils Dadu and Johi. This has diverted the floodwaters toward Manchar Lake.Meanwhile, the Jawans of Army Engineering Corps are presently engaged in plugging 115 feet long leakage occurred in FP protective levee in Tehsil Johi.Red alert has been issued for 11 Union Councils in Tehsil Dadu.
